School Supply Caddy

Today I finished one of my Pinterest inspired projects. Is it just me, or is anyone else out there spending their lazy summer days in a Pinterest induced haze? I sit at the computer day after day, pinning for hours on end, waiting for the motivation to strike me so that I actually get up and make something that I've pinned.

Homework Caddy from The Joyful Organizer

Usually it doesn't happen, but this one has been brewing for awhile. I've been collecting tin cans for weeks on end, forcing my kids to eat Spaghettios and pineapple chunks, just so I can have the precious cans. I've had some competition from Peanut Head too, because he also collects cans so he can do this to them.

He scares me.

Anyway, I've had this project in mind for awhile. I already had this serving plate stand, so basically this project was free, unless you want to count the paint. I'm not going to.

Never mind about the money I spent to fill this thing with school supplies. I have a wee bit of a love affair with school supplies. This is my favorite time of the year, right after Independence Day, when all the stores start stocking up on school supplies.

They make my heart go pitter patter.

  1. Oh I understand about the "pitter-patter". When I see the displays going up I give the expected "Oh no! Not yet!", but secretly I am so excited!!!!!

I found your blog on Pinterest and love your humor. =)

  2. Great job on the caddy. I've been doing a lot of pinning, mostly recipes. Haven't been cooking much because of the heat. When it cools off I'll have plenty of recipes to use.

  4. Wow do I loooooooove this project, just about as much as I love my school supplies... I am a bit OCD about them, too! I have a mad love affair with Sharpies.
Lovely job! Thanks for sharing!!! :)

  5. Hee hee, I also spend lots of time pinning and not enough time actually using the pins! Love your project, I am also addicted to all stationary, I love when it all goes on sale after school has started and then I have a good excuse to buy more :)

  6. Oh man, this is AWESOME. Nice work! :)

And I agree about Pinterest... I just stepped out of a pinning haze that lasted about 40 minutes! :) I need to pick 1 at a time to complete!

  7. I'm drooling, but I can't decide if it's because this post is about organization, or if it's because there are so many supplies all in one place or if it's because I am lusting after all those colors of spray paint. You are my kindred spirit. One year I bought so many mini-erasers and stickers and pencil toppers and binder clips and neon-colored & heart-shaped paper clips and squoosh balls that I didn't know what to do with them all, I mean except put them in my little OCD museum. So one day I had this brilliant idea when we were reviewing for a test--I started throwing them at the kids for every correct answer. They loved getting free supplies and soon they were trading---"I'll give you a green jumbo paper clip for that basketball eraser." Ah...I must be getting ready for school to start.

  8. This is SO cute! Is there anything better than a brand new eraser or a freshly sharpened colored pencil? If there is, I haven't heard of it yet. :)

  9. what brand/color is that pink? I have been looking for a good kinda neon rocker girl pink but only finding watermelon-y pink or baby pinks.

  10. I just made one of these too using a lazy susan and Target dollar spot buckets. I'm in love with it. http://homelife-sara.blogspot.com/2012/07/lazy-susan-supply-holder.html

Also you're funny and I enjoy reading your blog!

  12. Love this idea! Where did you get the "caddy"?

  13. @Anonymous, It's really supposed to be a serving plate stand, and I believe I found it at Target once upon a time.

  14. Love this caddy!! I've exhausted my search for those cute little white pails...do you remember where you found them?

  15. Do you have to do anything to the can edges, are they sharp?

    1. No, I didn't do anything to the edges and I haven't had a problem with them being too sharp.

    2. To me its the little things that are important. I want to be sure that the pencils, notebooks and folders are all things my daughter likes. It makes it more fun for her. She's still little. She's into that.

  16. I love this! Just made one for my classroom. However, I couldn't find bright green and yellow spray paint like yours. Do you remember what brand you used and where you bought them?

  17. The bright green is Rust-oleum brand spray paint in Fern, and I bought it at The Home Depot. The bright yellow was a Martha Stewart brand of craft paint for metal. I bought the Martha Stewart paint at Michaels.

  18. What kind of cans did you use? Are there certain ones that help prevent getting cut?

    1. No. I just used regular cans from fruit, Spaghettios, etc. To avoid cuts, I took some pliers and crimped the sharp metal against the side of the can.

  19. Is there instructions on how to paint? Like did you prep cans and what kind of paint will stick? Id like to make this for my kiddo.

    1. I cleaned the cans and painted them with spray paint. It was nothing special, just what I had on hand.
